A North Carolina ID card is free for anyone 17 or older and is issued at any driver license office on a walk-in basis, with the card mailed within 20 business days. Bring proof of identity and age, a Social Security card or proof of your number, and one proof of NC residency (two for a REAL ID).

North Carolina residents; $0 at age 17 and up, $16.75 for 16 and under unless legally blind, homeless (letter from a shelter director), or diagnosed with a developmental disability

How to get in

Visit any driver license office; every office takes walk-ins from open to close, and you check in by cell phone and wait to be texted. Homebound residents can file a Homebound Service Request

What to bring

One document proving age and identity; Social Security card or proof of SSN; one proof of residency (two for REAL ID); non-citizens need proof of legal presence
