Our promises to you

Story, Photo and Video Release

Your story is a gift to someone who is where you once were. This page explains, in plain words, what you are saying yes to when you share it with us, and the promises we make back to you. It goes with the short release you sign on the share your story form.

Last updated October 13, 2026

What this page covers

This release covers the video you send us through riseaid.org/stories/share, or a link you paste to a video already on YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok or Instagram. It also covers the words that come with it: the title, the name you choose to show, the optional line about you, what you wrote about what helped, and the captions made from your video.

When you send a video, you type your name to sign the release and check two boxes: that you are 18 or older, and that you agree. We save which version of the release you saw and when you signed it.

If you are a RISING MEMBER: the photo you add to your member profile is not covered here, and it is never posted. Only your mentor and our staff see it. A Rise Fund page has its own separate consent that you sign from your member page.

What you give us permission to do

By signing, you let RISEaid, free of charge, show your video, its captions and the name you picked:

  • on riseaid.org, including the stories pages, the program page your story fits, and our home page;
  • on RISEaid's own social media accounts;
  • in RISEaid materials that tell people about our work, such as The Rise Report newsletter, talks, fundraising appeals and reports to grant makers.

We may also trim your video for length, add or correct captions, pick a still image from it to use as a preview, write a short summary, and file it under the topics where people are most likely to find it.

We will not sell your video, and we will not use it to advertise anyone else's product. We won't change what you meant or put words in your mouth.

Your story stays yours

You keep ownership of your video and your story. The release is a permission, not a sale. You are free to post the same video anywhere else you like, and to share it with other groups.

We don't pay for stories, and you don't pay us anything. Sharing is a volunteer act of kindness, and we are grateful for it.

If you pasted a link instead of uploading, your video stays on that platform under your account. We show it on our site with that platform's player, and that platform's own rules still apply to it.

A person watches before anything is posted

Nothing you send goes up on its own. First, an automatic check looks through your title, your words and the captions for things like phone numbers, street addresses, full names, slurs, or signs that someone is under 18. This check is a simple word filter, not an AI tool. Then a person on our team watches your video and makes the call.

We may decide not to post a video. When that happens and you left an email, we'll usually tell you why, and you are always welcome to record a new one. When your story goes live, we'll email you a link if you said it's okay to contact you.

Your safety comes first

Everyday stories show only a first name or nickname. When you submit, we keep just the first word of the name you typed, so your last name never appears. Only people sharing as a known public figure are shown by the name they are known by.

Your full name, email and phone are kept private, stored apart from your story, and used only to reach you about your video. They are never shown.

If you are a survivor of domestic violence or human trafficking:

  • Your story is shown with a first name or nickname only. We will never show your real full name, your city, your workplace, your school, or other details that could help someone find you, unless you clearly ask us to in writing.
  • Before your story is approved, our reviewer checks it for anything that could reveal where you are, including what can be seen in the background.
  • Please don't say the name of anyone who hurt you, or where you live now.
  • You don't have to show your face. You can film your hands, a window, your back to the camera, or just the sky while you talk. If you'd like help making a video safer before it goes up, email hello@riseaid.org and we'll talk it through. If we can't make it safe enough, we won't post it.

If you are in danger right now, call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233 (text START to 88788). The National Human Trafficking Hotline is 1-888-373-7888 (text 233733).

Children and teens

You must be 18 or older to share a story with us. Our form will not accept a video from someone who says they are younger. If you are under 18 and want to share, a parent or guardian can call us at 888-860-RISE and we'll talk about what's possible.

If a child appears in your video, or you name one, we won't post it without the written permission of that child's parent or guardian. Even then, we may ask you to cut the part that shows them.

Other people in your story

Your story is yours to tell, but other people's privacy matters too.

  • If someone else can be seen or heard in your video, please get their okay before you send it. We may ask you to confirm that they agreed.
  • Don't share anyone else's full name, address, phone number or private details without their permission.
  • Music, clips or photos made by someone else can belong to them. Background music from a song you don't own is the most common problem. When in doubt, leave it out. See our copyright policy.

Telling it true

When you sign, you promise the video is your own (or you have the right to share it) and that the story is true to your own experience. You don't have to tell everything. Leaving things out is fine. Making things up is not.

Please share what helped you, not instructions for others. Things like medicine doses or what someone should do in their court case belong with a doctor or a lawyer. Our community guidelines explain more.

Changing your mind

You can ask us to take your story down at any time, for any reason, and you never have to explain. Email hello@riseaid.org, call or text 888-860-RISE, or simply reply to the email we sent when your story went live.

Here is what we can and can't pull back:

  • What we remove: your story comes off riseaid.org and off RISEaid's own social media accounts within 7 days of your request, and we stop using it in anything new.
  • Deleting the file: if you also want the video file erased from our video host, just say so and we'll delete it, not only hide it.
  • What we can't reach: newsletters already emailed, printed materials already handed out, and copies other people have already saved, downloaded or shared on their own. We can't call those back, but we won't reprint them with your story.
  • Links you pasted: we take the story off our site, but the video stays on your own account until you remove it there.

You can also ask us to change the name shown, fix a caption, or hide a detail you're no longer comfortable with.
