Copyright and DMCA Policy
We respect the work of artists, writers and creators, and we ask the same of everyone who shares on riseaid.org. If you believe something here uses your work without permission, this page tells you exactly how to reach us and what happens next.

What this policy covers
This policy applies to riseaid.org and the content on it, including video stories people send us, comments, resource and organization listings, partner logos, and videos from YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok or Instagram that appear on our pages through those platforms' players.
We follow the notice-and-takedown process in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), found at 17 U.S.C. section 512. We respond to notices that meet the law's requirements, and we remove or disable access to material when we receive a valid one.
If a video plays here from another platform, the file lives on that platform. We can take it off our page, but to have it removed everywhere you will also need to contact that platform.
Our copyright agent
Send copyright notices and counter-notices to our designated agent:
- RISEaid, Attn: Copyright Agent
- Email: hello@riseaid.org (please put "DMCA notice" in the subject line)
- Phone: 888-860-RISE
- Mailing address: available on request at the email above
Email is the fastest way to reach us. This contact is for copyright matters only. For anything else, see the contact details at the bottom of any page.
RISEaid is a Utah nonprofit corporation · EIN 43-2334222 · 501(c)(3) application in progress.
How to send a takedown notice
Under the DMCA, a notice must be in writing and include all of the following:
- Your physical or electronic signature (a typed full name works), as the copyright owner or someone authorized to act for them.
- A description of the copyrighted work you say was infringed. If several works are involved, a representative list is fine.
- The exact location of the material on riseaid.org, such as the page link and, for a video or comment, enough detail for us to find it.
- Your name, mailing address, phone number and email address.
- A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or are authorized to act for the owner.
If a notice is missing pieces, we may write back to ask for them. A notice that leaves out most of these items may not count as a valid notice under the law.
What happens after we get a notice
- We review it and, if it's complete, we remove or disable access to the material promptly.
- We make a reasonable effort to let the person who posted it know, and we may share a copy of your notice with them, including your contact details, so they can respond.
- Before we act on a notice about a survivor's story, we take care not to reveal anything about the storyteller that could put them at risk.
Some uses of copyrighted work, like short quotes for commentary, may be fair use. Please consider that before you send a notice. Courts expect senders to do so.
If your content was removed: counter-notice
If we removed something you posted and you believe it was a mistake, or that you had the right to use it, you can send our copyright agent a counter-notice. It must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- A description of the material that was removed and where it appeared before it was removed.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe in good faith the material was removed by mistake or because it was misidentified.
- Your name, address and phone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for your address (or, if you live outside the United States, any judicial district where RISEaid may be found), and that you will accept service of legal papers from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.
When we receive a valid counter-notice, we send a copy to the person who filed the original notice and tell them we'll restore the material in 10 business days. We put it back no sooner than 10 and no later than 14 business days after we receive your counter-notice, unless the sender first tells us they have filed a lawsuit to stop you.
Your counter-notice, including your name and address, will be shared with the person who sent the original notice. If that worries you for safety reasons, talk to us or to a lawyer before you send one.
Repeat infringers
When it's appropriate, we end access for people who repeatedly post material that infringes someone else's copyright. That can mean no longer accepting their stories or comments, or closing their access to RISEaid accounts such as the volunteer or member portals. We decide case by case and may act after fewer notices when the infringement is clear.
Please be honest
Federal law (17 U.S.C. section 512(f)) says that anyone who knowingly makes a material false claim, either that something infringes or that it was removed by mistake, can be held responsible for damages, including costs and attorneys' fees. Please send a notice or counter-notice only when you truly believe it is accurate. If you're not sure, it may help to talk with a lawyer first.
RISEaid's own name and work
The RISEaid name, our heart logo, and the tagline "We RISE by lifting others!" identify our organization. Please don't use them in a way that suggests we sponsor, endorse or partner with you unless we've agreed in writing.
Our guides, page text, photos and design are protected by copyright. You're welcome to link to any page, print guides for someone you're helping, and share our stories using the share buttons. For anything more, like copying a guide onto another website or using our logo, email hello@riseaid.org and ask. As a nonprofit, we say yes more often than not.
Stories belong to the people who told them. Please don't download or reuse a story video without the storyteller's permission. Our story release explains the permission they gave us, which doesn't pass on to anyone else.
If you see someone using RISEaid's name to raise money or pose as us, please tell us right away.
Email hello@riseaid.org or call 888-860-RISE. A real person will get back to you.
