Urban Ministries of Durham
Durham's primary public shelter for single men and women, with nine family rooms, a cafe serving three free meals every day of the year, and a food pantry and clothing closet. Shelter placement goes through Entry Point Durham, which currently does intakes by phone only.
Greensboro Urban Ministry
Runs Weaver House shelter for single adults, Pathways family shelter, a food pantry, Potter's House daily lunch, and walk-in utility disconnect help for Guilford County. Shelter beds fill fast, so the ministry asks people to call the Weaver House desk repeatedly during morning hours.
AHOPE Day Center
Asheville's low-barrier day center where showers, breakfast, mail, lockers, phone, and Wi-Fi are available each weekday morning, followed by case management for IDs, housing applications, and job documents. It is the starting point for Homeward Bound's permanent supportive housing, rapid rehousing, and veteran programs.
Recovery Hub Charlotte Peer Support Center

Call for safety planning, shelter screening, or to be connected to an advocate.
InterAct of Wake County
Wake County's domestic violence and sexual assault agency, with a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter and housing program, counseling, court support, and weekday walk-in hours. Crisis counselors can arrange transportation when you set up an appointment.
Helpmate Domestic Violence Services
Buncombe County's domestic violence agency, providing a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, case management, individual and group counseling, court advocacy, children's programs, and housing help. Start with the hotline; the business line is for non-urgent calls.
North Carolina Vital Records
Issues certified North Carolina birth certificates by mail, through VitalChek online or by phone, or in person at the Raleigh office by appointment only. The state search fee is $24 for the first copy; county Registers of Deeds can also issue birth certificates for births in their county.
North Carolina State ID Card
A North Carolina ID card is free for anyone 17 or older and is issued at any driver license office on a walk-in basis, with the card mailed within 20 business days. Bring proof of identity and age, a Social Security card or proof of your number, and one proof of NC residency (two for a REAL ID).
Food and Nutrition Services (SNAP)
North Carolina's SNAP program, called FNS, pays monthly food benefits on an EBT card based on income and household size, and people experiencing homelessness are specifically listed as likely to qualify. Benefits are counted from the date the application is received, even if it is incomplete, so apply right away through ePASS or a county DSS.
NC Medicaid Application
North Carolina expanded Medicaid in December 2023, so most adults with low income can get coverage. Apply online through ePASS (listed as Medical Assistance), by phone or walk-in at your county DSS, or by mailing a signed application; decisions take up to 45 days, 90 for disability.
Center for Community Transitions
Charlotte nonprofit serving people with criminal records through LifeWorks!, a job-readiness and job-search program at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, and the Center for Women, a 30-bed residential reentry program for incarcerated women. Re-Entry Services
County-run voluntary case management for people returning to Mecklenburg County from state or federal prison or a local jail sentence, with partner help for ID, treatment and medication, job training, work supplies, medical and dental care, housing, and peer support. SaySo (Strong Able Youth Speaking Out)
Statewide, youth-led advocacy group for people ages 14 to 24 who are or have been in foster care, group homes, or other out-of-home placements. Members get life-skills training, transition events like It's My Transition and LINK UP, mentorship, and a voice with legislators on foster care policy.

Transition Services, Rehabilitation and Reentry
State office that funds and oversees North Carolina's 20 Local Reentry Councils (26 counties) and runs transitional housing and other reentry programs for people coming home from prison. NC LINKS and Foster Care 18 to 21
North Carolina's Chafee independent living program (LINKS) for current and former foster youth ages 13 to 21, plus the Foster Care 18 to 21 extension that keeps young adults in care with financial support and case management while they work or go to school.
